The Massachusetts General Hospital History Program features a collection of medical artifacts, paintings, photographs and sculptures chronicling the hospital's rich history.
The first use of an anesthetic, ether, is demonstrated at Mass General in 1846.
The History Program website offers virtual tours and online exhibits as well as a timeline of Mass General medical milestones, several oral histories and an inventory of the many portraits, sculptures and artifacts located throughout the hospital.
